Within the framework of the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP), one of the most striking initiatives among our municipality's environmental policies, our municipality has analyzed the measures that can be taken against climate change at the local level with scientific data and has taken action. This plan aims to reduce environmental risks in different areas such as transportation, waste management, water resources, energy consumption and urban transformation.
The Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) is of great importance for Bodrum's environmental, social and economic future. NGOs, academics and citizens were also included in the SECAP process, which was carried out with a participatory approach.
As Bodrum Municipality, we are taking a leading role in global climate action at a time when the impacts of the climate crisis are increasing. Within the framework of the 2050 Carbon Neutral Target that we have committed to as a municipality, an important step has been taken and a Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) has been prepared within the scope of the Covenant of Mayors - Global Covenant of Mayors, which includes major cities and local governments globally and which we signed on September 3, 2020.
What is SECAP?
The Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) is a strategic plan that provides a roadmap for cities and local governments to increase energy efficiency, expand the use of renewable energy sources and combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. SECAP covers concrete actions and their feasibility for cities to achieve their long-term energy and climate goals.
The key elements of SECAP are as follows:
Current Situation Analysis: Analyzing energy use, carbon emissions and climate change impacts in the city.
Greenhouse Gas Inventory: Identifying the city's targets for reducing GHG emissions.
Action Plan: Concrete actions covering energy efficiency, renewable energy use and climate adaptation strategies.
WHY DID WE PREPARE SECAP?
SECAP, which aims to reduce the energy consumption of a region or city and its impacts on climate change, is critical for Bodrum Municipality to increase the visibility of its environmental projects on international platforms, to take a more active role in environmental sustainability projects and to be among the leading municipalities in energy and climate issues. SECAP, which aims to increase energy efficiency, promote the use of renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions, also includes strategies to adapt to climate change, enabling local governments to take concrete steps for climate action.
2050 Carbon Neutrality Target: Bodrum Municipality has committed to becoming a carbon neutral city under the Covenant of Mayors. SECAP creates a roadmap for the realization of this goal.
Access to European Union Grants: The European Union provides funding for projects in areas such as environment, energy and climate change. However, in order to benefit from these grants, a strategic plan is required. SECAP is a critical document that fulfills this requirement.
Local Solutions to Global Problems: The effects of the climate crisis are felt locally, but the solution to a global problem starts locally. SECAP ensures that concrete steps are taken in Bodrum.
Citizen Engagement and Awareness Raising: This plan also aims to raise awareness among the people of Bodrum on energy conservation, renewable energy use and climate adaptation.
SECAP's Contribution to Bodrum
Sustainable Water Management: Managing the water crisis we face due to the pressure on groundwater and surface water resources in our basin and the tourism density and seasonal population increase in our district.
Energy Efficiency: Increased efficiency in areas such as energy saving in buildings, smart energy systems and public lighting.
Use of Renewable Energy: Increasing the share of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy.
Reducing Carbon Emissions: Reducing Bodrum's greenhouse gas emissions for a cleaner environment.
Climate Adaptation Strategies: Measures to increase resilience against problems arising from the climate crisis such as floods and droughts.
Contribution to Tourism: Bodrum will stand out as a sustainable tourism center.
In conclusion, the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) prepared by our Directorate is of great importance for the environmental, social and economic future of Bodrum.
