WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY WAS CELEBRATED WITH EVENTS IN BODRUM ON 5 JUNE
The Bodrum Municipality’s Directorate of Climate Change and Zero Waste organised various events as part of World Environment Day on 5 June, with the aim of raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainable lifestyles.
On Friday 5 June, a procession set off from Milta Bodrum Marina and ended at the Town Hall Square; Kadriye Erkal Yıldırım, Head of the 1st Regional Directorate of District Services at Muğla Metropolitan Municipality; Bodrum Deputy Mayors Ercan Pehlivan and Kanat Hasan Özsert; Councillor and General Coordinator Emel Çakaloğlu; department heads; municipal staff; volunteers from Misgibi 1 Bodrum; students; and members of the public.
The World Environment Day celebrations continued with a programme of festivities held at Umurca Park on Saturday 6 June. The festivities were attended by Bodrum’s Deputy Mayors Tolga Karademir, Kanat Hasan Özsert and Ercan Pehlivan, department heads, students and a large number of residents.
Whilst the Directorate of Agricultural Services distributed seeds to members of the public with the aim of supporting local production, the Directorate of Parks and Gardens organised a plant-planting workshop designed to instil a love of the environment. One of the most notable activities of the festival was the used cooking oil collection event organised by the Climate Change and Zero Waste Directorate; to help prevent environmental pollution, citizens who brought in 4 litres of used vegetable oil were given 1 litre of new cooking oil as a gift. In addition, the Cleaning Services Directorate held an event where containers and cleaning vehicles were painted. Throughout the day, environmental-themed games, competitions and workshops ensured that residents were thoroughly informed about recycling, zero waste and sustainable living.
Bodrum Mayor Tamer Mandalinci, highlighting the importance of environmental awareness and the council’s objectives in this regard, stated the following:
“Protecting Bodrum’s unique natural environment is a responsibility not just for one day, but for every day. We will continue our zero-waste projects without pause, for a sustainable future and a cleaner Bodrum. We are delighted to be working hand in hand with our community in line with our environmental policies. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all our citizens, civil society organisations and environmental volunteers who have taken part in our events to protect our natural environment.”
Officials from Bodrum Municipality stated that awareness-raising initiatives and environmental education programmes, as part of the zero-waste and climate change initiatives, will continue throughout the year.
